Located on the banks on the river Arno in beautiful Tuscany, this city boasts a number of interesting places to visit, such as the Piazza of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli) which has a reputation as one of the world’s most beautiful squares. There are huge stretches of lawn here, surrounded by buildings that represent human existence: the cathedral (health), the Leaning Tower (reason), the Baptistery (baptism), and the cemetery (death).
The cathedral was commenced in 1064, and is a model of Pisan-Romanesque architecture, being clad with alternating bands of green and cream marble. Pope Gelasio II consecrated it in 1118. Its five naves contain many priceless works of art.

The famous Leaning Tower must not be missed: pre-book your entry tickets online at www.opapisa.it for 17 EUR (only if your visit is more than 15 days away), or pick them up at the ticket office for 15 EUR. Guided tours start every thirty minutes – make sure you’re on time, because the guides won’t wait for you!
The baptistery is another outstanding example of the Pisan-Romanesque style, with a magnificently carved pulpit. The acoustics in the dome are incredible: each little whisper resounds strongly.
The cemetery is reputed to contain soil brought here from Calvary during the crusades of 1203, and supposedly reduces bodies to skeletons within days. The interior of the long gallery was decorated with many splendid frescoes, but many of these were lost as a result of bombing raids during the Second World War. The cemetery holds impressive Roman sarcophagi and the graves of important Pisans.
