Relaxed chic on the Amalfi coast
Praiano’s name, which derives from the Roman term for ‘open sea’, hints at the sweeping ocean views that dominate this clifftop town. It’s part of Italy’s legendary Amalfi Coast, a striking mountainous coastline declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
Praiano holidays are all about that world-famous rugged coastline. The resort is divided into two areas: the Vettica Maggiore seafront and the mountainside Praiano. Fishermen traditionally lived in Vettica, while up in Praiano were the citrus farmers, who inspired the three oranges featured in the town’s coat of arms. Whether sunbathing or enjoying a stroll followed by a sundowner, you will appreciate the local saying, ‘For a healthy life, mornings must be spent in Vettica and evenings in Praiano.’
On either side of town you’ll find the popular hotspots of Positano, its pastel and terracotta houses tumbling to the sea, and Amalfi, where the 1,000-metre-high Monte Cerreto overlooks the ornately painted cathedral and bustling piazza. For a quieter, sleepier stay, holidays to Praiano fit the bill. With its whitewashed houses clinging to rocky slopes, this former summer getaway for Italian aristocrats makes for a laid-back and authentic base on the Amalfi Coast.
