Aqaba sits on the red sea, and is home to some of the best snorkelling and diving in the world. The most famous spot is the Yamanieh coral reef in the Aqaba Marine Park that sits to the south, but all around is a hotbed of under-the-sea magic. Up on the shore though, it’s not so bad either: this is a relaxed place that combines a lively entertainment scene with a small-town vibe. At 2pm, everyone retreats for a traditional siesta, which is a brilliant way of life, and the high heat of summer is always offset by cool sea breezes. Add in a history that dates back to 4,000 BC and a proximity to the spectacular sights of Wadi Rum and Petra, and you definitely won’t be complaining that the seaweed is greener in someone else’s lake.
