Built around one of the world’s best landmarks, Athens is an urban sprawl set among a spectacular history.

The Acropolis, one of the most influential buildings in classical architecture, is visible from just about everywhere in the city – making seeing it at its best, either lit up at night or painted pink and gold with the sunset, easy as anything. Outside the temple, artifacts up to millennia old are littered everywhere. Greek monuments, like the Erechtheion and Parthenon are just the beginning. There’s also Byzantine churches, 19th-century neoclassicism and echoes of the Ottoman Empire. And if you don’t feel like worshipping the ghosts of the past, then you can always head to Kavouri Beach or Lake Vouliagmeni to laze by the water and worship the sun instead.
