A vigorous port city, Bari manages to hold its own despite its position next to nearby show-stealing Lecce.

An old rivalry between the two cities makes for an interesting cultural experience (don’t mention soccer to a local if you’re not prepared for a strong opinion). While Lecce does get more of the limelight, Bari has its own draws: there are some seriously beautiful waterside views to be had and it’s much more urban here, thanks to its big university. History-wise, there’s plenty – visiting the bones of St Nicholas (Father Christmas) in the Basilica is a highlight, as is Bari’s pretty but gritty old town. But really, it’s the young people who make this city. The nightlife is better and everything has a sense of looking-to-the-future excitement.
