An island of ancient ruins and stunning beaches, Cyprus is the beach holiday for history buffs.

The glorious weather means you should aim to be outside as much as possible here. Luckily, most of the ruins and historical spots are open air: head to the ancient city of Kourion, sprawled romantically on a cliff, clamber up to hilltop St Hilarion Castle (reputedly once home to a fairy queen) or gaze upon the beauty of Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite’s Rock). The beaches are similarly easy to spend time on. For buzzy crowds, Nissi Beach is a treasure of white sand and blue seas.
