The Greek goddess of love was said to have been born on Cyprus and the city on the southwest coast is suitably full of ancient antiquities she would have loved. Explore the wildflower-surrounded Paphos Archaeological Site – one of the major reasons the city was awarded joint European Capital of Culture in 2017 – to step back into the days Cyprus’s myths and legends were set in. Or head to any number of the city’s historic sites: there’s the medieval baths, the 16th-century Church of Agia Kyriaki and catacombs. Then, once you’re done, modern Paphos awaits. Lower Paphos (Kato) is beautiful with its seafront views, but touristy. For a more authentic time, Upper Paphos (Ktima) is a serene, colonial-house-bedecked centre of local life.
