An island of castles and romantic cliffside walks, Jersey is where to go if you want to feel like a character in a novel.

First up is Mont Orgueil, a towering hidden-room-filled medieval castle. Move on to Elizabeth Castle next, a spectacularly beautiful building that needs no moat as it’s almost entirely surrounded by sea. La Corbière is equally rugged, with a lone lighthouse sitting atop a jagged rock formation. Once you’ve done those, don’t worry – this is the biggest of the Channel Isles, with literally miles upon miles for you to discover, including the vibrant capital of St Helier, affecting WWII museums and plenty of viewpoints for you to stand on and gaze stoically into the distance.
