Portugal’s capital, Lisbon and the Algarve coast have long been beloved by travellers. But a hidden gem has slipped by unnoticed in the shadow of her more famous sisters: Porto.

The city is blissfully low-key and relaxed. All white port and tonics at sunset and meandering through higgledy-piggledy streets. Take a turn toward the Douro though, and prepare to have your breath stolen by the view. Sweepingly dramatic, the city’s built into the face of steep banks on either side of the river. Head to the old town and you’ll find francesinhas dripping with beer sauce, soft bacalhau, artisanal sardines on bruschetta and an endless supply of pastéis de nata on every corner. They’ll have to roll you home – but that’s how you know you’ve done Porto right.
