There’s a glut of Roman ruins here, including the stunning Temple of Augustus and Arch of the Sergii. The main attraction has to be the miraculously well-preserved Roman amphitheatre though, which has withstood occupations, city-wide destruction and industrial rebuilding to stand in the centre, acting as loadstone to the hustle and bustle of this thriving commercial city. Despite Pula’s size, a small town attitude dominates here, along with chilled coastal vibes. Its position next to the adriatic makes for some stunning beaches – head out to the Verudela Peninsula for more of a resort-y feel, or do a day trip out to the Brijuni Islands National Park for a taste of island life.
