This is a landing city that’s totally worth a second look. Bulgaria’s capital has a youthful vibe, interspersed with some really interesting history. Communist monuments are mixed in with Bulgarian domes – the most beautiful of which belong to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – and Ottoman architecture. They’ve also just found 2,000-year-old Roman ruins underneath the city, though the modern trappings are just as good, with museums, parks and eateries all waiting to be explored. And, if it’s nature you’re after, head up Vitosha, a 2,290m mountain overlooking the city.
