Pretty, witty Zadar is an intriguing proposition.

It has one of the most cosmopolitan coffee scenes in Croatia, and gallons of blue sea surrounding it. The museums are first class, and there’s two truly unique sights: the Sun Salutation, a collection of glass plates that collects the sun’s energy and releases it as a light show at night, and the Sea Organ, a musical instrument powered by the sea. Yet, the city remains uncrowded, perhaps because most Croatian towns fall prey to the shadow of beautiful Dubrovnik. But don’t be fooled. The Habsburg elegance, Roman arches, and Venetian ruins of the sea-lapped old town are seriously good-looking. And the vibrant, energetic city life here is second to none.
